Goodbye to Berlin.

Summer in Berlin is unlike anywhere else. It's a must see experience.
Take a visit to the Bauhaus Archiv, explaining the art movement's social, political, and cultural rise, as well as the engineering expertise which even today marks Germany out as the powerhouse of Europe. The museum shop is worth a look as well, to pick up beautifully simple quality designs or a poster glorifying the classics of Bauhaus movement.

A more contemporary artistic outing is the Tacheles arts centre, a decaying graffiti scarred building which is home to a collective of artists showcasing their art, much of which is available to buy. Original pieces are often very Berlin focused, so make ideal alternative souvenirs. Do make a donation and pick up a I Support Tacheles flyer or sticker.

Around the same Orangienburgerstrasse area, go for a falafel teller at Dada's, in summer you can sit on the large street tables with cushion covered benches to enjoy surely the best falafel in Berlin, piled with hummous, borek, baba ghanoush, fragrant tabbouleh, fried halloumi and much
more!

From Middle eastern to Mexican cuisine, head to Dolores just off Alexanderplatz. Massive portions of tasty build it yourself Burritos, with vegan and vegetarian options, made it a favourite of mine. The tofu mole is to die for. Seriously I have dreams about that stuff. Wash it down with some Augustiner Bier, the oldest brewery in Munich I am led to believe. The staff are nice and friendly too. And usually quite nice to look at as well, which is always a bonus I think.

Voener, near Ostkreuz, is another culinary treat. Vegan currywurst is the main attraction here, but my personal favourite was the Wagenburger, which inspired in me a longlasting love of gherkin. Personally I'd give the egg-less mayonnaise a wide berth though, Tippex like bailworthy. The chips were the best in Berlin I think though. Keep an eye out for the random horse motif.

I'd also recommend a run (or a cycle or a inline skate or a kite flying sesh!) at the former airport in Tempelhof, which was used during the Berlin Airlift. (A level history thankyouplease). On the runway its a bit of a surreal experience. Running around the exterior circuit takes some guts, as it gets super hot as the sun hits the tarmac, so I'd recommend the course straight over and back.

Long lazy weekend breakfasts are the Berlin speciality, and my favourite place was the many cafes along the Bergmannstrasse in Kreuzberg. Cold meat, cheeses, eggs, breads and rolls, muesli, pancakes, fruit salad, juices and coffees, its quite easy to spend the whole day eating at one of these cafes. In the summer they spill out onto the street and make ideal people watching posts.

Turkish shops in nearby Schoenberg are worth a look, especially the supermarket with the delicatessen. The flatbread is especially good, for a hot summers day you can be transported to far away lands!

Any description of life in Berlin is incomplete without a mention of the various fleamarkets in the city. Boxhagener Platz in F'hain (Friedrichshain) is a particularly delightful one, and manageable in size but of course the masses go to Mauerpark, where the stone amphitheatre holds karaoke. Get there early!

A few minor things that piss me off about Berlin:
1. Transport is expensive.
2. Transport is often disrupted due to works.
3. A map of the bus network seems to be impossible to procure.
4. Strassenbahn I always thought was a tram, but the S bahn is more like the RER in Paris. very confusing.
5. I am allergic to some tree in Berlin, which made my eyes sore and itchy for the whole summer.
6. You can't buy hummus in a normal supermarket. Weird for a country with high Turkish population.

Isn't It Romantic?

I'm currently obsessed with Audrey Hepburn. I'm sorry, I am.

Ever since I got my hair cut short, I've been making a concious effort not to look like a boy. (i.e. slum around with no make-up, in just jeans and a hoodie. Although I love La Deyn, it's beginning to be so obvious, now everyone has a little peroxide crop and flashes of tartan.
I've tried out the Edie Sedgwick, but frankly and perhaps regrettably, I have neither the paitence or the physique for the look, even though I adore it. (who couldnt?!)

Anyway, AUDREY. Since I'm also planning my Eramus year abroad, hopefully in Paris (although the frequent nightmares of living in a cupboard for 400 euros is worrying me a wee bit), and I never much cared for Fred Astaire ( I always thought he was far too old for his filmic love interests) the obvious film is Sabrina Fair!
I love this film, sometimes I think it's on a par with Breakfast at Tiffany's. Mmm. Maybe not. BUT I still love it! Who couldn't love the song La Vie En Rose?! and Isnt it Romantic?! I am a closet romantic. Films like A Matter of Life And Death, Now, Voyager, I'm a complete sucker for! All my cynicism goes out the window with a good bit of old fashioned soundtrack...
I want all of these things:

Elements of The Past and The Future Combined to Make Something Not Quite as Good.

Zoolander

So yes. It's winter. It's cold. I haven't been out for weeks (cold, no money, gaah xmas, gaah essay, gaah exams). The cool thing to say would be that I'm getting cabin fever, but really i'm loving it. Lazing around all weekend in my pjs (baby blue bunny motif bottoms + random band t shirt+ big jumper + alpaca socks)

I love alpaca socks. I honestly do. I want to have a pair for every day of the week. Mine are such a beautiful fawny colour they're lush. Of course, we all know that the only bad thing about wearing massive socks is that you can't wear them out cos your feet won't fit in your shoes. BUT i can, cos of my Doc Martens being so massive.

To combat the horrible cold, I'm also living in a dark green plaid lumberjack flannel shirt, that some nice young man gave to me (hmm) on a debauched night out involving copious amounts of Vodka and Cherryade, old friends and a gay porn magazine.

The unfortunate result on my appearance is that i resemble some kind of 80s throwback skinhead/Smiths fan/tramp, but with impeccable MAC makeup = Derelicte!
This look is getting beyond my control somewhat, as I need a haircut, but cant afford one...:S

It's Christmas sooon! I know this cos the christmas lights are up in Glasgow city centre, adding somewhat more lights to the ones floating around all year...

Next year when I'm back in Glasvegas, I'm planning to go to a) Late of The Pier gig at Oran Mor  b) Back Tae Mine at the Flying Duck. Which will both be very exciting I hope, although I'm not getting my hopes up that much, cos last time I did (yes, you in the back, Glasgow School of Art! what's that you've got? pills?! a largely gay crowd?! lyricless Nathan Barleyesque music?! ) i was let down. Altho maybe i was misformed, not drunk enough, not in the mood...

This is my christmas list... let's hope Santa Claus decides I've been a good girl this year (it's debate-able)

Today's song is...How Are You by Bombay Bicycle Club
God, isn't it depressing when people younger than you are more successful? Good song tho.

How These Pressures Sting...

Pressures on the wing of a commercial airliner

But yes, happy new year to one and all. I hate New Year's Eve, its a very depressing time, so I stayed in with my sister on her 21st and we watched rented movies and got a take out curry. (Hitch, Shrek The Third, Night at the Museum and Chana Dhal, Basmati rice, Saag Paneer, Onion Bhaji, Naan, Raita YUM)

Righty right right. It's January. It's cold. It's rainy and windy and horrible. I vote we start hibernating in the post christmas exam badness depression. I don't do resolutions just because it's depressing. It's easier to do something about bettering yourself if you don't beat yourself up about it! This year I started the GI diet, or 'lifestyle change' and surprisingly it is really good. I'm never tired (altho that may be because of the 1o hours+ sleep I'm getting-oh yes, Glasgow University is the best in the world!). I'm vegetarian so I feel I deserve to not follow it to the letter.
ANYWAY,I'm not feeling very wordy, as I have to read The Scarlet Letter by Tuesday , Yasmina Reza's play Art, Bonjour Tristesse and Herman Hesse's Demian by the next week - I've a way to go, to say the least.

Here are some beautiful things that I want to buy:

Dress: £28, asos.com. Shoes: £55 Office. Necklace: £20 Tatty Devine. T Shirt: £15 Patrickwolf.com Skirt: £30, Topshop.

I would personally wear the dress with boots and a big coat and a big bag, or a black cardigan and flat patent pumps.
The shoes I'd wear with black opaque tights and any dress. or a low cut top and skinny jeans
The skirt, I think, could go anything really but I think a 3/4 stripy top would be rather nice.

Today's Song Is...
The World's Gone Mad by Handsome Boy Modeling School
How can you not love a band with such a name? If there were such a school I would happily be employed there. mmm.
I remembered the existence of this track and got it off iTunes some time between half 2 and 5am this morning. I love it. Alex Kapranos' voice really makes it. It's all mellow and melcancholy. Alex's bit in the video is quite hilarious. He looks so amazed and yet confused he's in a hip hop video. You've got to have something a bit special to stand next to a headline saying 'Handsome Boy' and not want to be sick into your own scorn.
